It is attention, yes — but it is also meditation. Focused awareness and the act of resting in stillness. These are not two separate meanings pulled awkwardly together. They are the same river seen from two banks.

When the guru’s grace brought me into the space of what the world now calls meditation, something shifted. A question rose quietly within: Is this the same dhyan I was taught as a child? The answer, when it came, was luminous in its simplicity: yes. It has always been the same.

The dhyan we seek on a meditation cushion and the dhyan our mothers asked for at the dining table are both, at root, the same act — placing consciousness in the right direction. Not losing yourself to noise.

Our culture’s quiet genius

This is perhaps the most extraordinary feature of our enriched civilisation: it did not leave its deepest truths locked inside temples and texts. It wove them into the smallest habits of daily life — into how a parent speaks to a child, into the caution before a task, into the gentlest reprimand after a mistake. We were practising meditation long before anyone called it that. The practice was simply called living consciously.

“What you place your attention upon, you gradually become.”— Gautama Buddha

This is not metaphor. It is the oldest law of the inner world — and it is also what every mother has been quietly teaching, one careful instruction at a time.

The three who show the way

In this long education of attention, three presences hold the highest place. The mother arrives first — she is the first guru, the one who shapes the quality of our looking before we have language for it. The father follows. And then, when life has prepared the soil, the Sadguru.

The guru’s work is not to carry us to the destination. That has never been his role. His work — and it is the most profound work imaginable — is to produce clarity. To part the clouds of confusion so that the path becomes visible. To adjust the angle of our attention until the light falls precisely where it should. The guru does not walk the miles for you. The guru makes the walking possible.

A sky that is clearing

There is also a celestial dimension to this particular moment. With Jupiter now in exaltation — having moved from the dispersing air of Gemini into the nurturing waters of Cancer — something in the collective atmosphere is quietly shifting. The scattered quality of recent months, the feeling of attention pulled in seven directions at once, is beginning to lift.

Many are noticing it: a growing sense of knowing, at last, what one is meant to do. A compass needle settling. The fog thinning not from outside, but from within. This is the grace of an exalted Jupiter — not fortune handed down from above, but clarity earned from below, meeting the cosmos halfway.

And for those on other paths

The law of karma asks for nothing.
